Malena Amusa is the Communications Associate at the Applied Research Center and co-editor of RaceWire.org. She has written community profiles and feature stories highlighting people of color for some of the largest newspapers in the world. In the spring of 2006, Malena earned her bachelor’s degree in newspaper journalism from Northwestern University.

For two years, she served as managing and executive editor of Northwestern’s longest running student magazine, BlackBoard, a publication about Black communities. She was also a contributing analyst for Northwestern’s award-winning daily newspaper during the 2004 Presidential Elections.

Covering political and social conflicts in communities of color, Malena has highlighted a range of issues: hate crimes against South African lesbians, HIV/AIDS legal cases, mental health and Asian women, racism and homelessness in Boston, child-soldiers living in Washington D.C., and identity issues among Black women. She has also profiled numerous emerging artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders of color.
