Subprime Lending, Foreclosure and Race

What is a subprime loan? Could some people who got subprime loans have gotten prime loans? What happened with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae?

If the economic meltdown has your head spinning, help is on the way. Today, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity released a new publication called: “A Primer for Advocates: Subprime Lending, Foreclosure and Race.”

The introductory primer contextualizes the crisis, dispels erroneous myths, and initiates discussion of where to go from here. And it’s written in an easy-to-read question-and-answer format. The primer can be downloaded here.

Another excellent annual getting at the same questions you raise here is "Borrowing Troubles" which has tracked the subprime market and lending patterns in Greater Boston. Report is produced out of the Gaston Institute at UMass Boston. Here is a link to a pdf of the most recent edition: http://www.gaston.umb.edu/articles/BT7--Jan07-final%20web.pdf
